Initial Exchange Offering Calendar (IEO) – All You Need To Know

With ICO hype dying down, the average blockchain project is trying to find alternative solutions to raise funds for their projects. Projects started to discover the new trend of Initial Exchange Offering, allowing them to perform their fundraising with less fear in raising sufficient funds.

What is an Initial Exchange Offering (IEO) in cryptocurrency?

An Initial Exchange Offering is conducted on a cryptocurrency trading platform. Contrary to Initial Coin Offerings (ICOs), an IEO is orchestrated by a platform on behalf of the blockchain project that seeks to raise funds with its newly issued token.

As the ieo token sale is conducted on the platform, token issuers have to pay an exchange listing fee along with a percentage of the tokens sold. In return, the startup’s digital assets are issued on the exchange’s platform, and are listed once the IEO is over. As the exchange takes a percentage of the tokens sold by the startup, the trading platform is incentivized to help project team with marketing operations.

IEO investors do not send participations to a smart contract, like traditional ICOs. Instead, they create an account on the trading platform where the IEO is hosted. The contributors then fund their exchange account  and use those funds to buy the blockchain project’s tokens.

IEOs on cryptocurrency exchanges

An increasing number of cryptocurrency exchanges have started to embrace IEOs. One of the first digital currencies was Bitorrent (BTT), which launched on the Binance Launchpad platform. In January, the token sale raised $7.2 million in less than 15 minutes, hitting the crowdsale hardcap, with immediate listing for trading accounts on the exchange.

While 15 minutes to sell all tokens in a crowdsale is better than anything a crypto startup can dream of, a token issuer on the Binance Launchpad established an even better record. The second Binance IEO, Fetch.AI, reached the hard cap of $6 million in only 22 seconds.

Following Binance’s success,, other notable exchanges announced launches of their own IEO platforms. Among the IEO platforms are Bitmax Launchpad, Bittrex IEO, OK Jumpstart (OKEx), KuCoin Spotlight, and Huobi Prime.

What are the differences between Initial Exchange Offerings and Initial Coin Offerings ?

An IEO is still technically a form of ICO, but the main difference lies in where the coin or token is offered. As you might be able to guess from its name, an IEO offers tokens through a partnering exchange, rather than directly to investors.

In a public Initial Coin Offering, anyone can participate, but in an Initial Exchange Offering, only members of that given crypto platform can purchase tokens. That said, there’s little stopping you from joining an exchange if you’re interested in a specific coin due to be released, so there aren’t really any hurdles for retail investors.

It’s actually easier to buy into an IEO than an ICO. Rather than having to go through the specific route of each individual ICO, you just follow the standard procedure for buying and storing tokens from that given exchange. In many ways, it standardizes the process from offering to offering, as the crypto marketplace sets the terms of purchase.

What are the advantages of IEO over ICO?

Security

Security is no longer an issue, as the exchange manages the IEO’s smart contract. The KYC process is also handled by crypto exchanges as most service providers do KYC/AML on their customers once their account is created.

Trust

One of the main advantages of is trust. As the token sale is conducted on a cryptocurrency exchange platform the counterparty screens every project that seeks to launch on its website. Launching IEOs involve alot of reputation risk, hence why platforms carefully vet the token issuers.

Therefore, cryptocurrency trading sites can eliminate dubious projects from raising funds via cryptocurrency exchange platforms, and it becomes much harder to scam contributors.

The RAID IEO case is an excellent example. Recently, Bittrex announced that it canceled the RAID IEO a few hours before the crowdsale. RAID’s plan to raise $6 million from contributors was a terminated following due diligence.

According to Bittrex, the partnership between the two companies was a vital part of the project, and when the cryptocurrency marketplace became aware of the event, it decided to cancel the token sale as they believed it was not in the interest of Bittrex’s customers.

Listing on the exchange

As token listings are also “in the deal,” it is a natural process that the cryptocurrency exchange where the IEO is conducted lists the coin of the startup after the crowdsale is over.

While IEOs seem like a more secure and efficient alternative to ICOs, the costs associated with token sales can be high for startups. Listing fees can go as high as 20 BTC, while exchanges can even take a 10% cut from the tokens of the fundraising companies.

How to participate in an IEO?

As Initial Exchange Offerings are currently, relatively rare in the crypto community, it is not that hard to find one that you like. After you’ve found your IEO of choice, you need to find which exchanges are hosting the token sale.

First, check the IEO Calendar above to choose which token sale you wish to participate in. Then register an account on the cryptocurrency marketplace and complete the KYC and AML verification process.

After you are done with that, check out the cryptocurrencies you can use to contribute to the IEO, and fund your account with a coin that is accepted in the crowd sale. The last step is to wait until the IEO starts to buy your tokens.
